Behind every high-performing team is a leader who brings out the best in others, not just by managing tasks, but by inspiring growth, adaptability, and purpose. In this interview, we sat down with Susan Wills, Accounts Payable Supervisor, whose approach to leadership goes beyond day-to-day operations. Whether you're in a leadership role or aspiring to one, this conversation is filled with relatable reflections and forward-thinking motivation. Dive in to see how a focus on people, progress, and purpose can shape a more resilient and empowered team.

What’s one thing about your role that makes you feel like you’re making a difference?

As a supervisor, one of the most rewarding aspects of my role is witnessing the growth and development of my team members. Seeing them overcome challenges, acquire new skills, and ultimately achieve their goals truly makes me feel like I'm making a tangible difference. It's incredibly satisfying to know that I've played a part in their professional journeys, helping them unlock their potential and contribute more effectively to our shared objectives.

What qualities do you admire in your teammates, and how do you try to embody those yourself?

Adaptability.

In our fast-paced environment, things can change quickly. I greatly admire teammates who can pivot gracefully, embrace new tools or processes, and remain positive even when plans shift. This involves openness to new ideas and resilience in the face of change. When changes occur, I aim to be a champion for them, helping my team understand the "why" behind the shift and demonstrating a flexible attitude. I believe that by modeling this adaptability, I can encourage my teammates to embrace change as an opportunity for growth rather than a disruption.

What keeps you energized, even on challenging days?

Challenging days often bring unique problems to solve, and I genuinely enjoy the process of dissecting an issue, strategizing solutions, and then working collaboratively to implement them. Every challenge is an opportunity to learn something new, whether it's about our processes, our tools, or even about the strengths and capabilities of my team members. This continuous learning aspect keeps my mind engaged and prevents stagnation, even when the going gets tough.

"Every challenge is an opportunity to learn something new..."

As you look ahead, what’s something you’re really looking forward to—either professionally or personally?

Professionally, I'm looking forward to leading my team through this evolution, helping them embrace new tools and approaches, and witnessing the innovative solutions that emerge from this enhanced capability.

On a personal note, I'm really looking forward to deepening my engagement within my local community. I plan to find more time for local volunteering initiatives and participating in community events.
